Salt House.

It probably didn’t work in their favour that I had eaten at Delfina, Nopa and Zuni Cafe in a span of a week before dining here. Before making reservations I took a glance at their online menu and already found in unpromising - but I gave it a try anyway. Compared to these restaurants, Salt House lacks in both the creativity and flavour that these restaurants carry out in their simple yet delicious dishes. I applaud Salt House for using seasonal ingredients, but besides the corn soup everything else was overly salted and bland. The most disappointing dish of the night was the poutine - Salt House gave this Canadian favourite absolutely no justice.

Prices are steep here. Be prepared.

Namu.

Posted by: Lynrei on 16 July 2007

yay! Just what the Richmond needed. Sure there are tons of trendy Asian fusion tapa type of places roaming around - but none of them have done it as good as Namu has. Not only do they serve great food, but they have an awesome selection of music - Bird and Ego Wrappin was playing one night! Even after my first and second visits, I keep dreaming about my next visit. I wouldn’t call this an innovated place, but everything is done well and that’s what I like.

Patisserie Chantilly.

Posted by: Lynrei on 10 July 2007

I’ve heard lots of good things and the reviews did not lie. This place is simply wonderful. French pastries with a Japanese twist; each excellently made and delicious to eat. Sesame filled creme puffs are no longer in my dreams - however, the strip mall location in Lomita California really kills it.

Gelato Milano.

Posted by: Lynrei on 13 May 2007

I’m not a fan of gelato or ice cream, so it was a surprisingly sweet find to find out that I enjoyed my assortment of cream here. Gelato Milano specializes in Northern style gelato and it is damn tasty. You’ll be surprised at how much flavours are packed in such small scoops.

Little Potato.

Posted by: Lynrei on 10 May 2007

oh my.

I’ve eaten a lot of things in my life, but nothing blew me away like the clear noodles I had at Little Potato. I wouldn’t even say that it’s entirely special, but it was comforting and made well - much like the other two dishes my friends and I sampled. And with prices like 3 dishes for $15 you really can’t go wrong.

La Palma Mexican-tessen.

Posted by: Lynrei on 4 May 2007

There’s not much to say about this place except that it’s the real deal and it’s good. Everything at the deli is made in store and it’s completely, utterly good (even the oily potato chips with hot sauce).

Delfina.

Posted by: Lynrei on 3 May 2007

Delfina is one of the few San Francisco restaurants that come in mind when needed to explain “San Francisician/ Californian cuisine. So simple, so local, so fresh and yet so tasty. An absolute no fuss, but fuss environment. I absolutely adore this place and with its’ affordable menu it’s no wonder there’s a line out the door before they open.

Love At First Bite.

Posted by: Lynrei on 2 May 2007

and since we’re on the subjects of cupcakes …

A friend of mine came out to visit from New York and wanted to do a food tour of Bay Area cupcakes (amongst other things). Besides taking him to Kara’s, we went to check out Love At First Bite in Berkeley. Like Kara’s, it’s a small operation, both places equally charming and delicious. If I were to mention a difference it would be that Love At First Bite had a lot more interesting combinations than Kara’s did. Plus mini’s of every variation cupcake they had!

Pho Phu Quoc (PPQ).

Posted by: Lynrei on 1 May 2007

PPQ was such a stable back in my youth. In high school, my friends and I would frequent this joint because of it’s large portions and inexpensive prices. Fast forward 7 years and I still occasionally find myself here. Still good, still large portions and still with inexpensive prices.

Kara’s Cupcakes.

Posted by: Lynrei on 1 May 2007

It took awhile for the cupcake craze to finally reach San Francisco. New York has Magnolia, Los Angeles has Sprinkles and finally San Francisco has it’s very own Kara’s.

I’m not going to be mean and do a comparison of the cupcake shops, but Kara’s Cupcakes is a feel good, non pretentious, homey good cupcake. Super moist cake, super soft frosting. Cupcakes that are filled are even more spectacular, adding an even more sugary goodness that no adult should enjoy. At around $3.25 a pop, it’s kinda pricey compared to those Hostess cupcakes I used to eat as a child, but at Kara’s they purchase their ingredients locally as well as organically. Heck, if that doesn’t scream San Francisco, I don’t know what else is.
