Tan Tan.

a small, charming place -

Tan Tan takes me back to my days in Kumamoto and Hong Kong.

Not everything is delicious, but sometimes presentation and mood itself is just as important as the food.

On The Bridge.

Posted by: Lynrei on 16 April 2007

I’ve been coming to On the Bridge for awhile now. Before the mega manga makeover, my old roommate Cliff and I would find ourselves here after a Friday afternoon stop at Kinokuniya. I love western style Japanese food; partly because I think western food itself is too heavy - but mix in all that cheese with mushrooms, or top off that pizza with tuna and I think it’s a perfect combination of east and west.

Joe’s Ice Cream.

Posted by: Lynrei on 8 April 2007

I’ve been coming to joe’s ice cream since middle school ( a good 12 years ago ) and not much has changed except prices are a tad bit higher.

Still good and I’m still ordering the same things - blueberry cheesecake and rainbow sherbet.

Poleng.

Posted by: Lynrei on 5 April 2007

Had a few friends in town the other week and we hit up Poleng for some Asian style “street” food served tapas style. Michael Bauer gave this place an amazing review, but maybe because I’m Asian and I’ve actually had a decent amount of Asian food and Asian “street” food that I’m not very amazed at what Poleng serves. Food is good and I enjoyed the concept, but the hype? I just don’t get it.

So.

So can’t compare to mom and pops in terms of noodles, but wings are just as good as the other place.

Minami Restaurant.

Posted by: Lynrei on 3 April 2007

It’s been sitting at a very lonely corner of Clement since I could remember. Nothing really stood out nor was the menu anything innovated or exciting, but my friend Kris recommended Minami to me and off we went one Saturday night.

There really isn’t anything special about the interior of this place, but the nigiri and sashimi here is most excellent. I’m not a fan of rolls so I can’t comment on that, but nigiri and sashimi here at Minami is up to par with Murasaki (my sushi joint) and so much cheaper.

Minami is tiny. Expect a wait. Expect your entire sushi order to come out at one time. Expect friendly good service and a fantastic time. I will be coming back soon!

Out the Door.

Posted by: Lynrei on 2 April 2007

When I first read, “neiman ranch beef noodle with london broil” it sounded absolutely delicious. And for $9! What a bargin! But when the tiny, tiny bowl came garnished with a very sad looking plate of bean sprouts, lemons and greens I knew that this bowl wasn’t going to be anything amazing like the pho I’ve experienced in my days back in San Jose.

And I was right.

I will say one thing though - they have a fantastic ginger tapioca that I will go back for.

Shanghai Dumpling King.

Posted by: Lynrei on 1 April 2007

Lots of variety can be found here at the “King,” but not all can hold such a title.

I’ve been here a few times and the dumplings are clearly the winner, but simple staples such as dried fried string beans and drunken chicken were a miss. I’ll keep to the endless choices of dumplings and small plates but stay away from the ‘real’ food options.

Inexpensive and crowded, expect a wait or share a table with a few strangers.
